Our first client to complete the journey in Mexico was granted Australian citizenship today for her twin boys. This is only the 3rd Australian IP to obtain citizenship based on a surrogacy arrangement in Mexico. The DIBP staff in the Australian High Commission in Ottawa, Canada have been most helpful.
This case took 42 calendar days (28 working days) but it was delayed by an error in the surrogacy agreement that meant clarification was sought. Without that error we believe citizenship would have been granted at the 20 working day point because that was when they asked for additional information.
The AHC Ottawa has advised that ALL Citizenship applications arising out of a Mexico surrogacy arrangement will be closely scrutinised and at this stage you should expect the application process to take the full 20 working days as advertised.
The Australian Embassy in Mexico City, which is where passport applications will be lodged, has confirmed that they will process all passport applications for children born through surrogacy without delay.
